Cork, Blarney Castle, Cobh & Queenstown Titanic Story DH02
Corkonians would argue that Cork is the best place to travel to in Ireland as they consider the southern belle to be the real capital. Be that as it may, Cork is famous for many things, and to name just two, the Blarney Stone and Cobh. The Blarney Stone is part of Blarney Castle just five miles from Cork City. The Blarney stone was a gift from Robert the Bruce in Scotland, to Cormac MacCarthy, the King of Munster, for sending 4,000 men to help Scotland defeat the English in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn. The stone is also known as the Stone of Destiny. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of the gab (great eloquence or skill at flattery). After Blarney, we move onto Cobh. Cobh is the main port in Cork and was the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic. Cobh, was renamed Queenstown in 1849 to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria. In 1920, when the Irish Free State was born, Queenstown was quickly replaced by the name Cobh (which is the Irish word for Cove). Whether you are interested in the Irish Emigration story, tracing your ancestors, learning more about the ill-fated Titanic and the Lusitania, or immersing yourself in the Irish naval and military history, Cobh Heritage Centre has it all and lots more. This tour is one of the many very scenic rail trips from Dublin

Clifden the Capital of Connemara and its famous landmark Kylemore Abbey. Connemara is an area of sheer rugged beauty. It is comprised of the Twelve Bens (mountains) and is renowned for all outdoor pursuits, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, fishing, etc and in addition is an Irish speaking area. Today Kylemore Abbey is owned and run by the Benedictine community who have been in residence here since 1920, after fleeing Belgium during World War 1. Be sure to check out the Victorian garden and chapel. At Maam Cross, the Connemara "crossroads", there is a replica of the cottage used in the 1950's John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara film "The Quiet Man". The best months to travel to Ireland would be May, June, July, August and September. Ireland’s northern position means that it gets dark between 10 and 11pm.

Ireland is the old country – actually thousands of years old. There is a lot of history and it’s a great reason to look up your ancestry. Two great cities to visit in Ireland are Waterford and Kilkenny. Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland founded by the Vikings and is most famous for its magnificent world renowned crystal. Kilkenny, is a medieval city with narrow lanes and historical buildings, two of which are St Canice’s Cathedral and Kilkenny Castle. Kilkenny is a quaint, charming city with cobbled stones, and has great pubs and restaurants. Travel west through the beautiful Suir Valley through Co. Tipperary.
